Founded by Dr. Fang Bian, HiFiMAN today is widely regarded as one of the leading designers and manufacturers of high performance headphones. Their planar magnetic over the ear headphones showcase the sound you would expect from a premium headphone brand.

The key to this unique sound is their specially designed drivers. Planar magnetic drivers do away with the inefficiency of dynamic voice coil drivers. Even and accurate movement of the conductive diaphragm through a magnetic field provides a more natural listening experience not offered by conventional coil driven headphones.

Praised by editors at CNET, as well as the expansive audiophile community the original HE-400 Planar Magnetic Headphones made a lasting impression on the headphone industry. In the spirit of constantly perfecting their craft, HiFiMAN still found room for improvement. The HE-400i takes the highly acclaimed headphones to a new level, with focus on improved comfort for extended listening.

The HE-400i is 30% lighter than its predecessor, with improved efficiency in the construction of the driver. The newly designed headband features an improved pressure pattern, allowing greater comfort during extended listening sessions. The new FocusPad beveled hybrid ear pads are made with pleather and velour, constructed to follow the shape of the ear and improve both comfort and sound quality. With enhanced comfort and efficiency, the new HE-400i Headphones are perfect for those looking to enter the world of planar dynamic audio.

This is the best headphones I have used so far and this is the one I use when I'm looking to really enjoy music. I use with a Schiit Fulla 2 DAC+Amp Combo. These two together blows the competition by a mile. Everyone I have asked to try this on has been mind blown by the quality of sound and clarity. Highly recommend this pair and will change the way you listen to music (Posted on 4/10/2017)

Comfort: As far as "full size" headphones go, you're generally going to have a fair bit of meat on your dome. That said, these headphones handle it well. The leather/fabric combo ear-cups do a wonderful job cushioning, and after a few hours of listening to stretch the headband, even the heads most sensitive to clamp will find these easy to wear. You won't confuse them with featherlight pair like Beyerdynamic T-990s, but multi-hour listening sessions are comfortable and pleasant. If you're sensitive to heat, the ear cups tend towards warm, but don't quite make the hot category.

Sound: You will not find another pair of headphones at this price point with better bass extension and clarity. It's simply not out there. In both the lows and the highs, the 400is reproduce comfortably with wonderful detail and imaging. The only thing they're missing is the ear-tickling upper mids. This really stands out when you compare them to a pair of headphones like the HD 650s which absolutely excel in that region. However, they more than make up for it in their bass performance.

The sound stage is sufficiently large, as you'd expect in the price point, but noticeably intimate compared to headphones that sparkle in the upper mids, producing more space. In that regard, it's a question of taste, rather than quality.

Value: The headphones blow most everything at this price and below out of the water, and seem to be considered the best value headphone in this range. (Posted on 3/27/2017)

The headphones are extremely comfortable and have a great sound quality. They are a bit difficult to drive, you will need at least a portable headphone amp to get amazing quality and detail.

Got them on sale and this turned into a great value (Posted on 1/8/2017)

The musicality and the detailed of these headphones is unequaled by most. You will not believe how clear and natural they sound. Nothing like this has ever been available at this prize. Comfortable no frills ergonomics and appearance. The headphones to beat for under $500, possibly under $1000, but I have not heard that many- certainly better bang for the $ than most, and not requiring a headphone amp (Posted on 11/29/2014)
